PRESS RELEASE
GOSPEL COMMUNITY GETTING READY FOR PREMIER GOSPEL AWARDS EVENT
- THE OASIS AWARDS
Britain’s gospel music scene is getting ready for the prestigious Oasis Awards, an event that will recognise the achievements of the thriving British and International gospel music industry and, for the first time ever, highlight the contributions and impact of Britain’s black majority churches on their local community.
Organised by Roney Henderson, founder of Musicstar Entertainment, the Oasis Awards are scheduled to take place at the Hackney Empire, London E8 on Thursday July 27th, 2006 and is set to be one of the highlights of the UK gospel music calendar.
There will be performances by leading British and international artists, well-known Christian personalities in attendance, and a total of 34 awards will be up for grabs.
Seven awards will recognize the achievements of church ministries, Christian leaders and community projects initiated by the black Christian community; 21 awards will honour British gospel artists and gospel industry practitioners and six awards will celebrate the accomplishments of overseas artists.
Nominations for the gospel music award categories will be invited from members of Britain’s gospel music community as well as the general public, and the winners will be decided by public vote on the official Oasis Awards website.
Nominees for the church awards will be chosen by the public, and a special panel of leading Christian figures from across the denominational spectrum will decide on the winners.
Roney Henderson, CEO of Musicstar Entertainments commented, “The Oasis Awards provides a great platform for Britain’s black church community and the gospel music industry to showcase its achievements and for the general public to hear of the great work being done by the church, and see gospel music being performed live by some of our most talented artists. The Oasis Awards will be an inspirational and memorable event.”
The Oasis Awards are taking place at a time when the profile of the black church and gospel music is at an all time high. Britain's black churches are considered the most stable, prosperous and influential sector of the African and Caribbean community, and it’s estimated that between 33-50% of African and Caribbean people regularly attend church.
During the past two years gospel music has seen its profile rise steadily and in the past 12 months there has been an increase in the number of satellite TV stations and radio programmes that regularly feature gospel music. This is coupled with the rise in web sites dedicated to writing about gospel music and its artists.
Sponsors of the Oasis Awards 2006 are Premier Radio, United by ONE, New Nation and HM Prison Service.
